This post announces a new project, the active line array. It is a self-powered constant beamwidth line array designed for serious listening and experimentation. It is portable, easy to tweak for different applications, and it has plenty of room-filling power. Since it also has a built-in streamer and can be used to replace a stereo rack and TV sound bar, it has an unusually high spouse-approval factor. It’s a speaker that you will think came from heaven1, but it can actually be built in your garage, although it is not an “easy” project. There are many formidable challenges, from PCB fab, SMD soldering, DSP design, Arduino code, and even Android Studio code. Can all of this be made intelligible and fun?…we’ll see.
The outline for this project at this link. There are still some major topics that need to be filled in, but a lot of the lower-level details are completed. There are links to schematics, PCB design files, the SigmaStudio project file and links to lots of Arduino and even Android code. Lots to chew on, with more still to come. Enjoy.
